Hello, this is my first post on this board and the main thing on my mind now at this time is my dog, Trav, who was just diagnosed with degenerative arthritis. He's only 4 years old and I'm so sad about this. I'm wondering if anyone else has a young (active) pet that has the same disability? We were told by the vet to keep Trav quiet and leashed at all times while outside. That's not working out so well. Hubby built a ramp for the long flight of outside stairs and Trav has accepted them, but, when his hip and knee are doing "ok", he tries to jump up on the couch or bed as he normally had been used to doing in the past. We are having a difficult time keeping Travie quiet. We were told that surgery may be in his future if all else fails. That's a $4000+ cost that I can't support at this time, nor in the future, given my financial situation as a retiree. Any helpful hints or suggestions will be appreciated. Attachments:

Oh my, I am so sorry to hear about this Piletre. I use to volunteer on the weekends at a pet rescue in Venice and Long Beach California. I am so glad that you are keeping the dog. We had a lot of dogs with this condition and people just abandoned them because they didn't want to deal with their condition or see them in pain. I love animals, and after I have my next operation and it goes well, I am going to be getting myself a golden retriever and one or two cats. I wish you and your dog well, and regardless of their ailments, they are still animals filled with love to give and to receive.

Alyssa.. We've had a variety of doggies for about 45 years and 4 of them have been goldens, who, in my opinion, are one of the utmost family oriented breeds. Our other "boy" is Bubba, an 11+ yo golden who was a rescue directly from a C-Section birth. The owner was a backyard breeder jerk. Long story about how we were able to get Bubba at 3 weeks old. Anyway, Bub now has hip displasia that developed in the last 6 months. Seeing as how he's really old, he's settled into his routine of eat, poop, sleep, repeat. The only real problem with him is that he detests the ramp that hubby built and refuses to use it. Hubby says that Bubba calls it "The Ramp of Death". Trav is just way too young in trying to curb his activity. He goes through the day alternating about every half hour between "OK" and extreme pain. Hopefully, we can keep him in semi-activity so the inflammation can go down and can give his hip and knee a chance to heal (although, we know that it will never actually "heal"). Attachments:

Beautiful pic of your dog Piletre, and it's great to hear that you have lots of them and love animals too. When I volunteered at the two shelters in California, I use to bring some home with me to potty train them. For me, animals are not property as the laws will say, they become part of the family and are a life that deserves love, care and respect just as one would give to a brother or sister, mom or dad.
